A Virtual Product Management Internship Experience

Introduction to My Virtual Product Management Internship

In the summer of 2020, during the global pandemic, I began a remarkable journey as a Product Management Intern at Cloudflare, specifically working with the DDoS team. This experience highlighted the potential of remote work and allowed me to gain a deep understanding of a leading network technology company. Even without stepping into an office, I delved into Cloudflare’s projects, particularly focused on improving their Network Analytics tool. In this article, I will share my remote internship experience, my roles and responsibilities, and how product management functions at Cloudflare.

Onboarding at Cloudflare During COVID-19

Starting my internship online due to COVID-19 was a unique challenge that transformed traditional onboarding. The 2020 intern class included students and young professionals from various backgrounds, all eager to contribute to a more open and secure Internet. Despite the inability to meet colleagues in person, Cloudflare creatively addressed this through engaging online seminars and virtual coffee chats, connecting us with global teams and providing insights into data protection and solutions like Workers.

To ensure a smooth transition, I was assigned mentors and a buddy. We also participated in weekly yoga sessions and intern meetups, which fostered a sense of community that was vital during isolation. Events like the virtual "Intern Mixer" and pub quizzes were playful ways to maintain community spirit and allow interns from around the world to share ideas and experiences.

My Role in Product Management

My primary project involved enhancing the Network Analytics tool, a vital resource for understanding traffic patterns and mitigating network attacks. Collaborating with teams from UX design to engineering, I aimed to improve communication and integration of new features into the dashboard, enhancing the user experience for both internal teams and external clients.

In the initial phase, I dedicated considerable time to engaging with customer support engineers and product managers to identify common issues and uncover opportunities for leveraging existing features. The goal was to create a more intuitive analytics dashboard to encourage user engagement.

Through conversations with clients, I pinpointed areas needing improvement and introduced features like trend insights, clarifying data changes and their significance. Testing these enhancements through one-on-one discussions helped refine their effectiveness and guided our ongoing development. Project management required consistent communication using remote-friendly tools, ensuring our team's alignment and productivity.

Conclusion: My Growth Through Internship

Looking back on my experience at Cloudflare, I realize that product management is a collaborative growth journey combining creative problem-solving with continuous product development. My internship provided valuable insights into the essential relationship between user feedback and interdisciplinary teamwork that fosters product quality. As I continue my studies, the skills and lessons learned here resonate deeply, underscoring both my personal development and my contributions to Network Analytics.

Cloudflare's expanding global network remains dedicated to protecting and simplifying internet usage, with Network Analytics serving as a critical component. This internship opened doors to technological innovation and team collaboration, preparing me for future opportunities. The experiences and connections I gained will undoubtedly shape my career, all thanks to this incredible opportunity at Cloudflare.
